Re: Confederate Militia during the war.
A couple of good an interesting quotes related to the militia in March of 1862. These are from Lt. John Lyle of the 4th VA. They came from pages 334 and 335 in James Robertson's Stonewall Jackson.
“The companies were not in uniform and each man was wearing the style of dress that suited his taste and his purse. The colonel of the regiments was an amicable, intelligent and patriotic old farmer, who did not know, or pretend to know, anything about military matters.” He continued to the say that man of the militiamen used umbrellas to shield their faces from the sun and; “Some of the men carried shot guns and other squirrel rifles, and others had no guns of any kind. The latter would ‘fight’m with gate hinges’.”
So even in the late winter/early spring of 62 there is a variety of "uniforms", clothing, and weapons used by the militia in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.
