I use the gents method of baking soda and water. I also add some crushed ice, then shake all together, rinse and air dry. Repeat if needed. You will be able to drink out of it after this.

MP Dave, that is my M.O. for canteens after events as well. Even with my two former rust kings (Johnny tin and Billy bullseye) there are not too many "iron deposits" with this method.

I use "Grandma's" brand molasses from the supermarket. Thick, black and sticky. Its about $2.50 for a jar. I use it on my flapjacks and rusty parts. The flapjacks get it straight, rusty parts get a ratio of 7 parts water to 1 part molassas, but 5:1 is fine too. Mix it up well in a jar first, then pour it in, full to the top. let is sit for a day, then pour it out into your jar, rinse and inspect. If there is still rust, pour it back in and let it sit another day. Repeat as necessary. I find anywhere from 3 - 7 days works well, but it just depends on how bad the rust is. I've used it to clean rusty musket bores, bayonets, knives and other things. It works well, is safe and inexpensive.

WpnsMan, that is why you rinse w/baking soda solution to neutralize the acid. In '05 or '06, I reconditioned my old bullseye of 20something years old and haven't had an issue with it yet. This is also the reason I said "read & heed the cautions on the bottle of Naval Jelly."
