  • Linen Thread Keeps Breaking

Awhile back I bought some logwood dyed linen thread. From the get go, under just the slightest tension the thread snaps in half. I have tried waxing the thread and it still snaps. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do with this thread to use it or should I figure it was just a bad run and order a new spool?

    Thanks

Tension by a machine or when hand sewing?

Perhaps it isn't a plied thread? I have several cones of the logwood dyed linen thread offered by FHW years and years ago. It's almost fuzzy looking, very thin, and semi-twisted single ply. Even doubled or quadrupled for sewing, then heavily waxed, it's weak. No way it can run in a machine either.

This happening while I'm hand sewing. Even just pulling it off the spool will cause it to break. It does look fuzzy.

Toss it. Weak thread will drive you crazy! Contact Needle & Thread in G-burg for strong/stout hand sewing thread. She may even have something Logwood dyed, though I would say dye is less important than strength & natural fiber content.

In addition to Needle & Thread (You have to call they don't list it on their website), County Cloth has it.

              Re: Linen Thread Keeps Breaking

Much modern spun linen thread IS junk--made of the short 'tow' fibers and not the long 'line linen' fibers. I'm using mostly French made threads these days, and the occassional vintage find. Its possible to damage the thread during the dye process with mordant and heat, but if its fuzzy, its a problem in the original source material, which is little more than floor sweepings at the mill.

You however, may find a better source for the thread you seek. Being fortunate enough to be a member of the First Minnesota, you'd be best served to ask Mr. Shaw.

                Andy,

Go to Wm. Booth, Draper website; http://www.wmboothdraper.com/

He is the first place I look for linen and wool material and thread (linen and silk). I have never had a problem with any of the thread he sells breaking and he has them in a variety of sizes/twist for hand sewing.
