I'm a newbie to reenacting, and am trying to develop an accurate impression of a western theater "Orphan Brigade" Confederate, and have a couple of questions regarding jackets (and their material). I've seen a lot of references to Columbus Depot jackets, but if I'm reading my research right, these weren't documented until late '62 at the earliest, and not all units received them. I'm wondering if perhaps, a plain commutation jacket would maybe be more versatile. Again, if I've understood my research correctly, couldn't a commutation jacket be appropriate for almost any year of the war. Also, would something like a plain wooljean shell jacket also be appropriate? Finally, and I apologize if I've rambled, how much more common was wooljean than wool?
