  • Federal Issue Shirt help

I'm making up a new shirt to improve the impression and ran into a problem.

I'm using the period impressions "Military Issue Shirt" pattern. My concern is the neckhole. The instructions are a little vague on how to lay it out. They state to unfold the body at the shoulder fold, lay the neckhole guide using the placement lines, and cut the neckhole. Using the neckhole guide provided in the pattern, it appears that the neck opening would be WAY too small and I would end up with nearly four inches of collar left over.

For those of you who have sewed up the shirt in the past, how is the neckhole cut? Is it straight across the back (at the shoulder fold) with an ovid to the front? Or is it an oval across the shoulder fold?

    Many thanks,
    P. Knierman, Gburg.
