  • Dark Blue Federal Issue Shirt Question

I have a fellow lined up to make me a Federal issue dark blue shirt with pocket. I would like to ask which material is correct and a good vendor that will carry it. Pat Klein perhaps?

    Thanks pards,

Re: Dark Blue Federal Issue Shirt Question

Pat Kline/Family Heirloom Weavers no longer produces reproduction CW fabrics; it's commission weaving now. You will want a twill woven wool flannel for your shirt, the same or similar to what fatigue blouses were made out of.

Re: Dark Blue Federal Issue Shirt Question

Let's start by clearing up some terminology. The Federal issue shirt was made of an older pattern with a single button and no placket or pockets, and was made mostly of unbleached dommet flannel. The shirt you are looking into was a contract variant shirt, which was made by numerous contractors from several colors of wool flannel (red, blue, brown/tan, and gray). The flannel thicknesses varied from contract to contract, but for your purposes, if you're looking at obtaining flannel, give a call or email to Dan at Wambaugh and White who can tell you what he has in stock for that purpose. Pat Kline (of Family Heirloom Weavers) is doing very little retail cloth sales these days, as they have changed production to other projects and prefers to do large wholesale projects. Dan can give you more details about that as well, since he continues to purchase quite a bit of cloth from FHW
