  • 46th VA - Wise's Legion - Craig County Minute Men

A friend is in the process of doing some Family Tree research, and knows that some of his ancestors were in the 46th VA Vol. Regt. which fought under Wise. He knows his ancestor was captured @ Roanoke Island, and has read the Regimental History Book.

Aside from the Library of Virginia or Virginia Historical Society, are there any other sources available on the Craig County Minute Men or the 46th Virginia Volunteer Regiment? Specifically, we'd be looking for pictures, diaries, letters, examples of dug stuff from their camps...etc...

As always, a go-to source is the Virginia Historical Society in Richmond. You will usually find some obscure minituae there.

This is David James Traynham of Wise's Legion. However he was in the 59th VA Inf Co. E. He was also captured on Roanoke Island and later paroled. Hope the photos help.

As [one of our cavalry] passed by, the general halted him and inquired "what part of the army he belonged to." "I don't belong to the army, I belong to the cavalry." "That's a fact," says [the general], "you can pass on." Silas Grisamore, 18th Louisiana

          Don,

I'm no stranger to the VHS and have probably read more than most on this forum out of that institution. I've got a list of records at the VHS we'll be reviewing, but was looking to see if anyone had any helpful information.

              Paul,

I think I'm still a little new here to have attachment privileges. E-mail sent with pics attached. There's one early war pic with his frock coat and the Legion and are at the Valentine Museum in Richmond. a late war pic with a RD III (?). I have a note here somewhere that he drew clothing on Dec. 31st 1864 while at Petersburg.

There is a book that's out of print that I've been trying to get my hands on called "The Wise Brigade: 34th, 26th, 46th, 59th Virginia Volunteer Infantry C.S.A" by L. F. Southard Jr. There may be some good info there. Also, Conrad Wise Chapman painted a few pictures of

Any other info and pics on this unit I would really like to see myself.
