Air shaving is pointless...... Plus, most authentics don't have spectators walking in and out of camp all the time, therefore, air shaving is just a waist of time.

Folks, it appears this topic may be at an end. Ms. Timour's information is great, and brings out a lot of points that any person recreating a trade such as barbering would need to know.

I would encourage anyone interested in seeing "period shaving" done, to get a good razor, and learn to shave himself only--and then, depending on the event scenario, he might get a chance to do so.

"Air shaves" and planned comedy do cross the line into farbism--in pursuing an accurate portrayal of the lives of mid-19th century people, we need to avoid excess theatricals, and planned comedy rarely comes off as a naturally humourous situation. And, as has been pointed out, without a blade, there is no shave--not even an air shave... taking the edge off the whole impression quite neatly.
