I am looking for information on what type of closure is correct for food bags, poke bags, ditty bags etc. I have heard Jute Cord is correct, but I wanted to make sure. I bought some Jute "twine" at WalMart, but I don't know if it's what I need to use. Any help would be appreciated.

Do whatever you like really ... there is no "correct" way to close pokes.

    String tacked to the outside
    Buttons
Edge Pressed down and felled w/ cord draw string...
or no closure at all, just twist the end...

Take that jute "twine" back to WalMart....
Walmart is a horrible store... bad record when it comes to land preservation! :baring_te :baring_te :baring_te

I agree 100% with Mr. Weddle. I usually use plain cotton string. Sometimes I use hemp cord. I occasionally use jute.

I'm not looking for a way to "Close" them...I am looking for correct material to use for the closures, in other words will regular cotton woven string be, in a sense, authentic?

          Mr. Gerkin,
The Jute that you use, is it twine or cord? The one I bought looks like a smaller version of hemp. It is woven in 3 strands and appears hairy....for lack of a better word.

                Sir,

I use both sizes of the jute. It depends on the size of the bag. It is three strand, and "hairy". Mine comes from a hardware store, not Wal-mart(besides, it is closer and cheaper).

Yes please, everyone, stay out of Wal-Mart. You'll just go in there make a mess of everything and annoy people like myself who have to clean up after you. Don't worry, I'll still get paid the same.

If you want correct cordage get in touch with the guys at Ropesmiths. I haven't met anyone who has done as much research about period rope and cord as these guys. They definitely have their act together.
