    Re: cartrige rollin'

Personally, I like to use about a half-3/4 of a cotton ball rolled up and put into the already tied off paper tube. Then about a hundred grains of powder and they come out about right and bundle well. It all has to fit in the lower part of the cartridge box tins (caps included). They ram down great and don't leave a burning bush in front of you!

      Re: Striking the Cartridge

I know this is kind of late, but as I was reading Gilham's tonight I came across the passage that Mr. Underwood was probably referring to about striking the cartridge.
On page 70, paragraph 63, "To use this cartridge, tear the fold and pour out the powder; then seize the ball end firmly between the thumb and forefinger of the right hand, and strike the cylinder a smart blow across the muzzle of the piece; this breaks the cartridge and exposes the bottom of the ball.

Obviously these WOULD have been used by soldiers, contrary to other folks' beliefs. Who else would use them? Politicians? They were probably used for training exercises. I for one, would love to know the specs. Obviously you can't use them for any senario where a soldier would use live rounds; but why not drill?
