Please move this if it is in the wrong place.

I am looking a purchasing a M1842 springfield and I am not sure which brands are the best out there. I know of Armi Sport and Euro arms but are there any others? Thanks.

Nate: The 1842 Springfield is a beautiful firearm!

Unfortunately, Euroarms closed their door and went out of business in 2010/2011. The Armi Sport version has gotten some good reviews and would make for an excellent choice.

You may want to keep your eyes open on this fourm, and others, to find a good used one. I found an excellent used 1861 Springfield within a few weeks of looking.

    Best to you,

      Re: Purchasing a musket

First, this is a frequently asked question on the forum. As noted in one of my favorite posts on this forum :

Subject : Search function - use it

We like good questions.. repetitive questions however tend to make us want to kill the neighbor's cat. Once you've been around these forums for awhile, you'll know what I mean.

We have a real fine search function here. We spent good money to make sure it's the best search function available. Please give it a whirl and you might be surprised how many topics and in what depth a particular subject that you might have interest in has been addressed, readdressed, and so on.

If you find a thread that pertains to your question, read it through... and if you need more info, and the search engine doesnt turn anything else up, by all means.. ask!

This is standard message board ettiquette... nothing particular to hardcores or reenacting.

So, what did you learn from a search of the other discussions on the forum about this same question?

Second, you asked the same question on Szabo-land : http://www.cwreenactors.com/forum/sh...245#post195245 Asking a basic question there then running over here to ask the same basic question puts in jeopardy not only the neighbor's cat, but also all the cats on the block. For this type of question, you're going to receive many of the same answers if you use the search function there as when you use the search function here.

        Hey Nate.

Euroarms does not make a '42, and also they are out of business - having been bought out by Pedersoli. Pedersoli makes an M1816 conversion but that's the closest thing they have to a '42.

Armisport is the only game in town at this point for quality 1842 repops, and it has often been said on this forum that the AS M1842 may be one of the most accurate "out of the box" replicas made by the Italian market. Also, Armisport has rolled out a special 150th Anniversary model of the M1842, which they call "defarbed". See http://chiappafirearms.com/product/2455. But whichever you get, you will probably have to do a little work to it for authenticity. There are several threads on the forum and a few expert pards on here with guidance as to whom to send your musket to for defarb work, and/or guidance on how do to it.

Of course, if you're in the market for a new AS or AS Anniversary musket (they are not cheap), and would be considering having it defarbed, you may also want to just consider picking up an original. There are a number of percussion conversion models and even M1842 smoothies out there available for the right price.
