The Mason Jar was invented in 1858 by John Landis Mason of Philadelphia. Mason brand jars are more straight sided than the nearly as period Ball jars. The big difference was that the wearly Mason jars came with one piece zince screw on caps rather than the two-piece lid-and-ring that we're familiar with today. For period sealing you can top a canned poduct with melted was and a cheesecloth cover tie in place.

This last one is a place to buy them wholesale if you have a tax number. I got cases of them here at GREAT prices - $6-8 each - and have used them at events and for gifts for a few years. Hope this helps for your mason jar needs and you can always buy barrels for large quantities like we did at Shiloh.
