  • Besy ways to Patch an tin bullseye?

    Hello,
I recently bought a tin Bullseye canteen from a friend And it has one or two small holes in it, So what i am curious is how did they repair canteens during the war? I thought maybe a little bit of silver solder would do it but i wanna see if there are any other ways to patch a hole?

Are you talking about patching a hole made by rust?

Yes sir, Or atleast that is what i presume did it. they are quite small and the canteen is still very sound.

Clean off the oxidation around the hole with some sandpaper or steel wool. Use a sharp round point to indent the material around the hole. The hole will get bigger but it will solder easier. After that it is just a matter of using some acid base flux and lead free solder. Make sure the solder melt temp is less than 460 degrees (melting temp of tin).

If you have pin holes developing and see one or two holes, there are probably more. The tin is wearing off the interior of the canteen and exposing the steel base. I have repaired some things that only had a few holes and ended up patching dozens of spots that were about to break thru.

I think they "repaired" canteens, at least in the Federal Army when the supply system was working, by throwing them away and buying a new one from the QM.

You could make two nice canteen halves.

This is what a friend of mine did to my (smoothside)1980's Jarnagin canteen, I didn't want to get rid of quite yet. These canteens came with the correct pewter spout, and once defarbed, these were nice items to have.

However, a couple years later had to buy a new one....
