  • Hat Brass

    Gentleman,
I am kind of at a stand still.
I recently purchased a nice Hardee Hat From Mr. Bender, and I find myself lost as to where I may find a nice quality Jeff Davis eagle, and a Infantry bugle to throw on it.
I am not sure if I should go the mainstream route, or if that would be considered unacceptable.
Any suggestions or help with this would be very appreciated.
    Thank you all.

    Ryan,
Take a look at this post by Paul McKee: http://www.authentic-campaigner.com/...995#post210995

There are a few fellows that I'm sure will chime in for help on modifying the back of the hat pin. If I remember correctly, Brian White has some experience with this.

I picked up a pin and infantry horn from S&S Sutler at Shiloh for next month's Perryville event. A friend is doing the modification to the hat pin for me. Not sure what S&S's sources for these are, but the pin has one of the better stamps that I have found on reproductions. I know that S&S carries a fair amount of Military Warehouse items, so the infantry horn may have come from Mr. Kindred.

Funny that you bring this topic up, I was just recalling how the prices vary so widely on the brass hat pins at trade shows. At the Middle Tennessee Show last year, they ranged anywhere from $25 to about $200 on just some of the ones I looked at. The more expensive ones had backs like the photos Paul McKee was kind enough to share. The less expensive ones had the thin, straight brass wire. I was told by one of the old collectors, a fellow that I have a great deal of respect for, that the pins with the straight brass wire are likely 20th century repops from some of the first reproductions made.

      Thank you Jim,
I actually did a search for this subject after I posted, and had a good amout of time to look through the article.
Sometimes I believe my brain works faster then I want it to.
I will hopefully have enough time to do this project before Perryville hits.
      Thank you again good sir.Ryan

I do not have any Jeff Davis eagles in stock. Also thanks for the nod but I only sell wholesale.
