Being in Florida I have always been interested in the units from the land of flowers. I know the 1st, 3rd, Infantry left Fl with 69 cal muskets but after that? The 4th had smoothbores until right before kennesaw they got enfields. The 6th and 7th had enfields from their beginnings. In Virginia the 2nd had 69 cal muskets until they received springfield rifles. The 5th also had springfields. The 8th??? The 9th, 10th, 11th ?? Any info will be appreciated. Jim Hensley

Re: Weapons carried by Florida units?
Howdy Jim,
I've been through most of the 7th Florida's records on microfilm. While the regiment did score a few hundred of the New Smyrna enfields, it was not enough for the whole 1,100 men who deployed to Tennessee in mid-62. Co's B and K at Tampa were ordered by Col. Perry to bring what they had as there were no guns for them. watson's diary confirms K company had smoothbores (he mentions buck n ball, etc.), and I assume B Co. was equipped the same, as prior to their organization the ordnance stores at Ft. brooke included a couple hundred old springfield muskets, etc.
Regarding the 4th Fla., I think Wash Ives mentions Mississippi Rifles in the hands of some of the companies in 62...
cheers,
Archie
There is an ordnance return for Co. E from the spring of 63 which shows that company had a mix of .69 and .58 cal. weapons. Cosmo Bailey of Co. D wrote his father after Chickamauga that he and the rest had got new Springfields and Enfields picked up on the field.James "Archie" Marshall

From a really excellent website:
ANV Brigade: http://www.blueandgraymarching.com/t...rigade-fl.html
AoT Brigade: http://www.blueandgraymarching.com/h...tes-divis.html
Notice the AoT report has them being "new" Enfields just issued.

Thanks Will, great references. Regarding the New Enfields of the Fla. Brigade AOT, Wash Ives says they were issued these on the night of June 26, 64, and were dissapointed in not having a chance to use them to effect in the Kennessaw attack...James "Archie" Marshall
