  • Where to begin?

I have been very interested in living history for some time and now that I am in a finacial and professional position to allow for me to participate with a unit, I am wanting to know where to start when building an accurate Impression, do you portray an actual member of the unit that you represent, or are you just some nameless face? I have questions about grooming and hair styles, to who makes the most accurate 1859 Mcclellan and tack, what about weapons? Any guidance would be strongly appreciated.

    Re: Where to begin?

    Andy,

First, welcome to The Authentic-Campaigner! I think that you will find that members here will help you find good answers to your questions and get you started building your impression(s) and finding good events to attend.

Second, I must remind you that you need to sign your full first and last names to each post. There is an automated signature function that makes this seemless as you post.

    Thank you!

      Re: Where to begin?

      Andy,

      To follow-up...
I would point your cavalry-specific questions to our folder "Cavalry Camp of Instruction". There are a lot of leaders in the "critter" side of the hobby that can really get you started in the right direction!

As to your other questions, in short... Yes!
People have different motivations in the hobby. Some portray an individual, others portray a generic representative from a given unit, and many (myself included) taylor our impressions to suit each event we attend.

A good place to start is to find a group of like-minded folks in your area so that you can begin attending events with a group that places authenticity on the same level of importance that you do. In your area, I would suggest you consider contacting groups like the Old Northwest Volunteers ("ONV"). They can get you started developing your impression and answer a great number of questions. Also, they host and attend quality events in the Midwest, as well as living history events on Nation Park Service sites.

Welcome to the hobby and best of luck to you!

        Re: Where to begin?

        Sir,
As noted above, find a quality unit that will guide you along your way re: uniform, equippage, etc.
But a singular bit of advice is to buy yourself well-fitting, quality made footwear. Most units will lend you items as you purchase your own, but brogans or boots are generally in short supply. This forum has some quality vendors for footwear in its listing. I lean toward Missouri Boot and Shoe as I've been highly satisfied with their work and service. Nothing worse than having an otherwise fine event spoiled by blisters and aching feet. IMHO.
