  • Best Shirt Pattern for Federal issue/private purchase

    Hello All,

I am trying to find the best pattern for making either a Federal issue or private purchase shirt. I'd like to construct a shirt or two before I tackle a a Sack Coat and SA trousers. I have extensive sewing experience, but its been a few years and I want to dust off the proverbial cobwebs. I am looking for the most authentic pattern I can find. I have never been real good at making a pattern out of a book (such as a Gody's type). Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Try Childs Holiday shirt but I have to say I think a shirt is more work than a jacket or sack coat and more complicated

Charlie Childs has a Federal issue shirt pattern as well which is a better alternative since the Holliday shirt while a fairly representative civilian style is based upon a NC issue shirt from late in the war. Charlie and Ben Tart both offer Domet flannel appropriate for a Federal Issue shirt.

You can't go wrong with a kit from Wambaugh, White & Co. They have kits for both of the shirts you are looking for.
