  • How much Japan Dryer?

    Hello All....

Question for the forum...I am repainting a Federal Knapsack and have gone through the archives for the paint recipe (which I found). However, it says a "splash" of Japan dryer. Now, my OCD is working overtime.....can someone tell me an exact amount or what is too much (and for that matter what happens if you use too much).

I use a cap full to a batch of paint. Don't know if that's enough but I've always had good luck with it.

Sean, if you can wait until tomorrow afternoon when I get home from work, I will gladly send you my recipe that I have had great success with.

Another link on Boiled linseed oil. to my recollection the "boiled linseed oil" sold in hardware stores is NOT what you want but I can't remember why or what is recommended:

              Hallo!

              Correct..

In brief and to over generalize....

Period "hard oil" was cold pressed linseed oil that was taken to the boiling point

More so-called "Boiled Linseed Oil" is a different creature it being purified linseed oil with its hardening agents removed, that is then mixed with metals and other chemicals, and has oxygen bubbled through it at temperature.

Long story short.. it behaves differently that PEriod "boiled linseed oil."

So much so, that they now add hardening agents (often varnishes) and dryers to it such as "Tru Oil" or "Linspeed Oil."

I am fairly "radical" with Japan Dryer and will add as much as 25% by volume to finishing oils to REALLY ramp up the drying time. So much so that I like to have something dry in an hour or two rather than days or weeks. And so finish say a gunstock in a day rather than weeks.

Christof--Perchance you missed the first part of my post?

Curt--Does adding more Japan dryer have any adverse reaction with the paint, linseed, or lampblack? Specifically will it crack or be uncooperative in any way?

Christopher, I think that was directed towards Mr. Kaiser.
