Federal box plate details

Just a simple question here that I can't seem to find an answer for despite having used many search methods. On a Federal box plate how far apart were the loops on the back? I seem to remember 2 &1/2 inches but I'm not sure about that. Could someone be kind enough to fill me in?

2.5 inches is what the 1850 and 1861 Ordnance manual calls for but you will find slight variations from time to time.
