Ive been searching the forum all morning for this info and have found some interesting and informative things, but not the answer to my question. So here goes. Does any one know of a list of Contract marks and Inspectors stamps? Or can you direct me to examples. I have been examining an original Federal Mounted Services Jacket that has an inspector stamp of H. Shaffer US INSP. It seems his stamp was low on ink or the mark is partially obscurred with age. I have found referance to a V. H. Shaffer US INSP Cincinatti OH. Who I believe to be one and the same. The problem is the jacket is hand sewn (cant tell about the long seems). There are also 3 black size dots by his mark. A non distinguishable purplish mark in the left sleeve. and another unreadable mark in the center near the coller. Several of the buttons are back marked Scovills Exta. Any help would be appreciated.
