  • Federal blanket

I picked up a Federal blanket and I would like to identify the maker. It's tan/brown with a Chain like weave, no US in the middle and it is unraveling at the top and bottom. I can send pics if you give me your email.
    Thanks in advance.

Is is fairly soft or on the 40 grit scratchy side? Is it more tan than brown? And how wide are the end stripes?

        Re: Federal blanket

He sent me several photos yesterday, and I'm stumped. Imagine a Julius Jones with a "return selvage", not a "tucked selvage" (which eliminates a Julius Jones and a NJS). Its also not an Abe Thomas, Auggie Weissert, or Keagy Noble. Ideas?

Robert, I know the one in the middle is from a different run than the one on the left. Care to part with it ( I have the one on the left and right ) for a reasonable price?

            Re: Federal blanket

The middle and the left are identical apart from age. They are both County Cloth Fed 1851s.

Sorry Mike, I am a blanket hoarder, they are not for sale.

              Re: Federal blanket

I have a National Historical Society blanket/Fred Gadie (Sorry for the misspelling.) that I bought in the 80's. It was one of those brown early war blankets. When I received it did not have a US on the blanket. But it had instructions on how to sew a US.

Blanket hoarding is indeed a worthwhile endeavor. Then again, I have a similar... problem.

My blanket looks like the one on the far right. I'd say it's exactly like that one.

                      Re: Federal blanket

There was a fella on the other forum that offered Federal blankets for sale that look like the one on the right of Robert's photo. It had a pronounce cut selvage, was the brown color with red and blue shoddy through it and it came along with instructions for sewing different variations of the "US" on it. When I bought one, he claimed that it was copied from an original at the Chickamauga Museum. But I gather from talking with another person later on, there was some controversy about the claim because they apparently do not have a Federal blanket in the museum's collection. But that is the extent of what I learned.
