  • US Blanket Assistance

    hello,

first time posting here so please forgive any faux paus...

I am trying to stitch a "US" onto my gray blanket but need the following questions answered
    • How tall and wide are the "US" letters?
    • are the letters centered in the middle of the blanket
    • how wide are the black stripes at the top and bottom of the blanket?

I picked up a 100% wool blanket (gray) and plan to use this on my knapsack and as a display blanket for living histories.

    Thank you all in advance

      Re: US Blanket Assistance

      Hallo!

The "US" was ore of a concept that just one pattern or form. IMHO, cop the one that you find on the original you are copying.

How tall and wide are the "US" letters?

      Regulations called for:

1599. BLANKET--- woolen, gray, with letters US in black, four inches long, in the center; to be seven feet long, and five and a half feet wide, and to weight five pounds.

That being the "concept," or ideal, originals are found with hand-applied quilt stitched (aka running stitch) or chain stitched, and even a few rare stamped reverting back to pre 1851 standards. The font style of the letters vary, as do their actual side such as NUG 1 inch wide stitch lines... 5 X 3 spaced 3, 4.25 X 2.25 spaced 1.75, 5.25 X 3.25 spaced 11 end to end, 5 X 4 spaced 4 apart, 6 X 4 spaced 4 apart, 4 3/8 X 2 3/4 spaced 7 end to end, etc.

Due t manufacturing as well as shrinkage, dimensions vary a bit.

are the letters centered in the middle of the blanket

Yes, find the center by running diagonal lines from each of the four corners.

how wide are the black stripes at the top and bottom of the blanket?

Again a concept, but on surviving originals the widths of the two end stripes vary, such as from 2.75 to 3.25 inches.
Distance from the ends vary at 4 to 6 inches.

These are woven into the blanket not applied later (so so-called "de-farbing" an old thin surplus Navy blanket (like my first blanket) or a cheap Sutler Row does not work so well).
