    Re: Boot Question

I have never seen boots lace up like the ones shown in the picture. Hollywood is famous for fantasy pieces in that way. I would recommend encouraging your friend to look through as many pictures of period boots as possible before deciding on an appropriate pair for his impression. There is enough variety available among originals that it is not necessary to go down the "reenacting a movie" path.

      Re: Boot Question

Yes, that was my first thought too. Hollywood . But after having seen so much more curious period things, I think the best way to clear up, if it is period or not, is asking people, who know more about boots than I.
I will wait a while, and if no one here knews such patternend Period Boots, I try to get hin back on the right way !
My question is a favour for a buddy, who didn' t speak english.

könnte ich schlage vor, ein Paar von zivilen kurze Stiefel, hoch wie ein privater Kaufsache dokumentiert.

might i suggest a pair of civilian short boots, highly documented as a private purchase item.

              Re: Boot Question

              Hallo!

I would venture a guess of Hollyweird mutant - someone combining a early 20th century "Tom Mix" cowboy boot with a post 1890's "packer" boot. And with a "tight to leg" cowboy style pair of trousers.

                  Re: Boot Question

I knew I saw a pair of those boots somewhere. After I got home last evening, I have a photo of a bunch of fellers from my hunting camp, circa 1920's, two of the feller's are wearing something very similar to the boots in the initial photo. In both cases, it looks like the laces start at the top and continue for only about 6 to 8 inches down. And in both cases, it looks like the guys have on "riding" pants, for the lack of a better term. I still have my grandfathers pants of this type, they're canvas and waxed and actually have lace's where they end, just above the calf. So if I can get the photo into a computer, I'll post it. But you may just have to trust me on this one.

                  ;)

                      Re: Boot Question

They are from the feet of the lead character and former Confederate officer on AMC's "Hell on Wheels" about the transcontinental railroad. Those boots are just a miniscule introduction to some of the accuracy issues in the series as a whole.

                        Re: Boot Question

                        Hallo!

If one looks at images of working cowboys in the post 1920's, typically half or so are wearing lace up boots versus even the riding heeled, pointed toe contemporary fashion "cowboy" boots.

"Riding" boots with partial, half, or even full front lacing became popular a few decades earlier and seems to have reached a peak during the 19 "teens," 20's, and 30's. I have a pair of original WWI officer boots that are fully laced.

I have high arches and some styles of boots and tall boots have to be a size larger to allow my foot to pass. "Laces" allow for greater adjustments for a tight fitting boot that matches one's foot and calf shapes. By the same taken, one of the curses of earlier trousers is cramming excess "leg" into tight boots which can be uncomfortable so lacing at the top also takes care of that. I wonder why it was not thought of earlier when trouser legs were fuller before the cowboy fashion of tight legs.
