  • Correct Enfield Cartridge Box Sling

    Comrades,

I have an Enfield cartridge box and I want to buy a sling for it. Do you need a special sling which is especially made for this box and is thus historically correct or will any sling bought from a hardcore vendor do?

For example Mr Houde is selling a "Enfierld cartridge box sling" and I haven't seen them on any other vendors' pages.

    All help appreciated!

    Yours,

    Eric Seppälä

      Robert,

You and I are on the same wavelength this week!

      Eric,

LD Haning (Tim Welch) makes, IMHO, the best English box currently available. The original he copies resides in the Wisconsin Veterans Museum and was recovered from the Cornfield at Sharpsburg by an Wisconsin soldier and carried home as a souvenier. The original box definitely saw Confederate usage.

Regarding the sling, Welch also produces the correct sling for this box.

Is it a Brit 3 piece sling or one of CS make?

          Clark,

It's a one-piece sling. It is my understanding this is the correct sling for exported boxes as it is also the narrower width than called for in British Regs.

Interestingly, the sling width compares very favorably to the slings in the images of 18th Mass soldiers who were also issued English accoutrements.

Thanks John for reminding me of those import slings, I'd forgotten about those.

              Clark

Im trying to visualize what a three piece sling would look like. Do you think you can give a brief description?

              Thanks.

Clark can correct me here, but I think the three piece slings had one piece for the sling and seperate pieces for the end tabs.

That way, if a tab wore out or a hole pulled through, it could be replaced without scrapping the whole sling. Of course, only the ever-thrifty British military would have thought of something like that.

That is what I was thinking. But you never know, we are talking about military items :tounge_sm

Yes, John, that is what I was refering too. Makes since when you think they were designed around the expensive white bufff leather, actually makes real good since. :wink_smil
