  • "TD"

One of my favorite descriptions of Civil War soldiers is "Portrait of a Private" from Abner Small's The Road to Richmond. Small asks us to picture the typical Union fighting man: a "most unattractive and disreputable-looking fellow, bowed under fifty-eight pounds of army essentials, and trying to suck a TD."

My question is: what is a TD?

"TD" were the maker's initials marked on clay pipes. The name escapes me presently.
