  • Constructing a Silk Flag

    Greetings All,

After reviewing some photos of regimental flags carried by the 11th Ind. Vol. Inf., I've become quite interested in the idea of reconstructing one or more of them.

The two bits of information that are lacking for the project are:

    1. What method of construction was used to join the pieces of the flag together? I.e. rolled and whipstitched, run and fell, etc? This seems to be a very important aspect since the flag will be made of silk and will need to withstand a good deal of abuse in the wind.

    2. The paint used on the flags appears to be a gold-metallic of some sort. So far I've been able to find yellow (of course) but nothing resembling gold. Any idea of the compisition of said paint?

Thank you in advance for your input,

    Brian

    Re: Constructing a Silk Flag

    Hi Brian,

The best person to talk to about the construction of extant 11th IVI colors (several were issued or presented to the regiment during the war) would be Steve Hill, of the Indiana War Memorials, Indianapolis IN. Depending on where you live, you might be able to arrange for a personal viewing of the colors in their collection. Judging from the experience of others, you'd better do your homework when it comes to painting on silk (or silk/poly blend) since it can get to be a complicated and tricky process.

Here is Steve Hill's e-mail address. Tell him Mark Jaeger sent you:
