How to clean the inside of an 1858 canteen

I have an original 7 ring bullseye canteen that I used in reenacting 35 years ago and I want to clean the rust or what ever is in there so I can use it again. Thanks in advance.

It's what I have, and if it's usable, I will use it. If it is not usable, I will get a repro.

Think I would go with a new one. After all these years the tin lining is probably rusted through.

If it's usable, then it has collector value. If you want to possibly destroy a canteen that's worth a few hundred, then continue. Just don't trip and fall in the field...

I guess it has served me enough through the years. Time to get a new canteen or use the Confederate canteen made by Andy Adooms/Mark Lathem. I do like the US canteen better. Does any one recommend a good 1858 repro?

Ulrich has some hotdipped tin canteens. If you can get an Old Orchard Hill or Jersey Skillet Licker one, you are ahead of the game though.
