  • Wartrace tin canteen from Blockade Runner- Authentic?

    Gents:
Firstly, I’m new here (this is my first post) but have been “spooking around” a couple years. I do CS eastern theater. Am transitioning from mainstream to authentic.

Anyhow I’m looking to get a new canteen and considering Blockade Runner’s tin “Wartrace canteen”. It looks good to me, and very comparable to the original shown from what I can see but dang it they never show enough detail. Have searched the old threads and can’t find anything on this specific product.

Now, I know that BR has a varied reputation around here, and a lot of their stuff is thoroughly mainstream. Two things immediately come to mind though:
    1. Small size. It measures 5.5in diameter X 2in deep. I jotted down the sizes of tin canteens (sample size=20) at Museum of the Confederacy1 . While there was one 5.5 in2 and one even smaller (4.25in)3 the majority were 6-6.75 inches. Of course the original was 5.5 in as well.
    2. Material. It’s made of tin, whereas I was thinking hot dipped tin was the norm.

So now that I’ve put you all to sleep, does anyone have any advice or input? If it doesn’t pass muster, is there something better for a comparable price? $50 is about the maximum I am willing to go as I want to get one for a comrade as well.

    Joseph-

I don't know how good the "Wartrace canteen" from Blockade Runner is from an authenticity standpoint but if your concerned about that and I assume you are I would recommend going with a product from another sutler. If you go to the S & S Sutler in Gettysburg's webpage under canteens they have a CS tin canteen pretty close to your budget at $ 54.00 and their goods are top quality in authenticity and craftsmanship.

Have custom-sewn, authentic reproduction, historically accurate clothing created for Civil War reenactments.

I would agree with Louis. There are other alternatives. You might also put out a 'want to buy' post. There are a lot of top quality canteens in the hobby and you might be able to find one that has been gently used.

I don't know of a cooper drum canteen at the MOC, however they do have a tin drum canteen. I also know that Axel Ulrich's tin drum canteen is spot on against 2 originals I've held. His tin drum canteen is available from S&S, Tim has them instock. Its made of period correct hot dipped tin. I carry one myself.

As usual, just my .02˘, hope it helps.

          Gentlemen,
Thank you for your responses. I checked out the approved vendor's list (as I probably should have before posting) and decided to go with Olson's tinware.
