Re: Civil War shotgun authenticity
Could be. It's hard to tell from the photos. One would need to check the barrel proofs and other markings. However, if it is what the dealer says, that alone doesn't translate to Civil War use. I also think it is priced too high from what I can see. Anyway, if you're hoping to get some sort of validation about Civil War use here, you're not going to get it because nobody can tell. The bottom line is if you really like it and you want it, then buy it. I'd definitely negotiate that price though.Michael Comer

Re: Civil War shotgun authenticity
A pre war shotgun could be had between $100 and $300. I have purchased an 1840's English shotgun for $125 and will cut it down when I finish rebuilding the locks.Joey Hernandez Co. I 8th Texas Cavalry

Re: Civil War shotgun authenticity
Howdy!
The Industrial Revolution had a great impact on shotgun production "flooding" markets with affordable products. Plus the Belgians jumped in and produced legions of them for the more "common man." Even after floating pin/cartridge slowly phased out and replaced percussion in the 1870's largely to be eventually phased out by hammerless starting in the late 1880's/1890's.
After the War number of American producers popped up who made guns and then stamped for their customers who were gun shops, general stores, and hardware stores, etc.
As shared, the markings and proof stamps help to ID when and where it is from.
NOT saying this is the case, but some sellers stretch things on the possibly that a Period piece could have seen CW military use, especially Confederate cavalry, because it drives up the asking price if it is martial even when it cannot proven so.
