  • Pipes (not the Scottish Kind)

While tobacco is obviously a rather large part of the backstory and daily life of this time period, what I don't see available are any scholarly reviews of the types of pipe more commonly used by either side during the war. I freely admit I could be looking in the wrong places, which is what brings me here!
Does anyone know of any good studies on smoking paraphernalia in North America during the 1860s? If I'm going to enjoy a pipe at an event, I would rather do so un-farbily!
    Thanks, all.

I recommend the search feature on this forum. Pipes, tobacco, and the sub-culture and minutia therein related, have been discussed heavily over the years. I also recommend you google "Randy Ubben pipes" and look at his research examples.

For reading material, I can recommend:
Tobacco & Americans, by Robert K Heiman
Tobacco and Smoking Among the Blue and Gray, by Ben Rapaport

Mr. Ubben's pipes are both authentic and good smokers.

My Ubben is one of my best smokers, and authentic.
