time in service half-chevrons

Comrades,

I know in the regulations is states that half chevrons are worn to
indicate time in service, one for each 5 years. The last paragraph
of the regulation talks about service in war being marked with 1/8 inch
stripes - sky blue for Artillery and red for all other corps.

Now finally to my question - for a true "old timer" - i.e. regular with 30+
years of service at the start of the Civil War - what exactly would
constitute 'service in war'?

I would think that certainly the Mexican War would count but what
about other wars such as the Black Hawk War in 1832 or the Seminole War
in 1835?

John, without any kind of information that I've found available about the proper issuance on "combat" stripes, common sence would tell me that for each war served in, they would get the piped stripe. So if you served in the Mexican War, and then the WOTR, you would have 2 piped stripes. Kinda like the multiple stars on combat infantry badges worn today by soldiers.
