Re: Question concerning drums/beginning military impression

Thank you, Mr. Kindred! Your explanation of the musical notation is very clear and makes perfect sense to me. I believe I shall try my hand at teaching Jacob how to read music. I do appreciate all the help you all have given me! Thank you ever so much,

Re: Question concerning drums/beginning military impression

I strongly encourage you to use Florance Drum Company. Their drums are of the same quality of the legendary Cooperman, but at about half the price. Their website is http://florance-drums.com/ . Mr. Florance does his own paintings and everything. You have to ask for a catalog from his to get prices, but it's well worth it. A starting price for a 12 year old boy would be somewhere near $325.

      Hope I helped,

Re: Question concerning drums/beginning military impression

        Good day, Mr. Isaacs,

Thank you very much for your advice. I actually did get a brochure from Mr. Florence last week with his prices/products listed in it. The drums look nice, and the price is very good compared to some other companies I have looked into. It looks like Jacob may get a drum sooner than we initially thought. . .he is practicing well and very enthusiastic about everything. It's a joy when a family member shares a common love of history!

        Thank you once more,

Re: Question concerning drums/beginning military impression

Cooperman has outstanding drums, but since he is a beginner, I assume, you dont want to pay that much for a drum. Decent companys are george caroll drums which are good and then there are florance drums which sound pretty good.

As far as drum heads go, the best bet is fyberskin even though is isnt authentic. The calfskin might break in wet weather and cause you tons of trouble, however the fyberskin looks alot like natural skin but is very durable.

The shell(body) of the drum, depending on your impression, should be unpainted incase you go confederate or vise versa.

          I hope I helped,

            Miss Edwards

When I started at the age of 12 I was lucky that the unit I started with had a drummer to school me. I wam offering the same for your brother. I live in Greenville so depending on what part of centeral Il you live it may be in your area.

Re: Question concerning drums/beginning military impression

Thank you for your reply as well, Mr. Cokeley! I appreciate your comments on the drum head. I did end up getting Jake a used drum to use just until we can afford a better one. He is so eager to be marching with the gentlemen in our unit, and is doing well practicing, so actually he bought this drum himself, with a bit of financial help from me. It is a wood shell and unpainted - sounds like that is a good thing!

Mr. Dollinger, thank you so much for your very kind offer. I looked up Greenville and saw that it is about three hours south of us. Perhaps I will see you at an event, sometime!

Thank you again, I am most deeply grateful,
