  • Scabbard sewing advice needed

    Pards,

Bought a sword bayonet for my Enfield 2-bander, a genuine one with no scabbard.

My next project will be the sewing of the scabbard and frog.

I already have some second hand information considering the work to be done. Anyway, it might be good to get information from somebody who has made scabbards before.

Can anybody give me advice on this project?

For example the correct leather, right stiches, thread et cetera

    All help appreciated

    Eric,

Lots of folks could give you advice but if you're asking these types of questions I'd just have someone make the thing for you. You're going to spend a lot of money to buy the right supplies, them maybe botch a few examples before getting a finished product that may or may not be authentic given your skills. I don't want to discourage you at all, but I'd start with a few smaller projects first. Scabbards are very difficult. Off the top of my head you'll need:

6 oz bridle leather-maybe a little thinner like 4 oz
    linen thread
    appropriate buckle-for the frog
    period leather dye
    diamond shaped awl-for the holes
    harness needles
    proper kit wax
    plus an assortment of tools

Check Weaver Leather or the Leather Facory and maybe order their catalogs to get an idea of leatherworking tools, etc. and go from there. Either way, best wishes on the project.

We bought a hide from Zack White(www.zackwhite.com)to make belts off of several years ago. The hide alone was about $165. If you're planning on making anything out of leather, get ready..... Chaaa-Ching!
