alternate leather??

    alternate leather??

    I was curious as to what other types of leather besides cowhide, would have been used for leather goods (not necessarily traps) and what types of uses there may have been for these goods...

    By types of leather, do you mean treatments (ie buff, oiled, blackened), grades (harness, bridle, etc...) or actual animal skins that aren't from cows (sheepskin and pigskin.)?

    Please advise and I'll do my best to answer your questions.

      I know that several European countries in the 19th century used horse hide for various military items, but I have never heard of it being used here in the states.

        I know buffalo hides were exported to Europe after the Civil War for backpacks.
        I cant think of a reason why anyone would use anything else byt cattle hides, except for goatskin gloves of course. Goatskin cause they are so supple.

          Yes I was reffering to types of skins...other than cowhide...

            Dog(for gloves), horse, mule, goat, lamb, calf, unborn calf, shark, buffalo, deer, sheep(hair on), antelope, rodent(beaver or muskrat), mink, wolverine, badger, fox, coyote, wolf and about any other criter you can think of were skinned and tanned for various uses. For example squirell makes very strong and resilent lace.

              The "It will be out some day book" by Butch Myers will discuss some of the other animal hides purchased by the CS gov. All kinds of critters went into service in one form or another.
