  • Blue/Gray Kersey, where to get?

More of a question to "update" on where to get this material, who is the best source to get Blue/Gray P. Tait Kersey material? (Tried "search", no luck)
FHW lists theirs as sold out,
Childs still lists the K1 on their website...

    Anywhere else for a source?

If FHW is sold out then you may be at a loss friend. Their new policy states that they will be selling what fabric they have left until the end of November, after that, it will all be done through wholesale. CJ Daley is retailing some of the fabric that is left. He is currently out of Tait cloth, and if FHW is sold out, then he may not be able to get any until November.

County Cloth does offer a K1 fabric, as you mentioned. This is the quote about it:
"#K1 - 100% Wool, 58" wide. This is the fabric widely used for mid-late war Richmond and Charleston Depot garments. It also appears in imported Tait jackets, a couple of double breasted frock coats and at least one surviving great coat."
It does mention that this fabric is used for the Tait garments. If FHW proves to be a "no-go," you cannot go wrong with Charlie Childs. Nice to have two such outstanding sources, huh?

K-1 is a bit lighter in color than FHW cloth but also a bit more substantial. Chris Daley used both on his Tait run. Charlie Childs makes Tait jackets out of K-1 as well.

If FHW is out, then K-1 is it.

Although listed as "Temporarily Out of Stock", you may still buy FHW B/G Kersey, but through Daley, rather than directly from FHW.

So, there are still two great suppliers!

Question, though: Could anyone comment on CC versus FHW B/G Kersey as compared to the original goods, rather than each other? I've not had the chance to view an original garment made from this fabric in-detail and I'm curious what others have seen.

          Thanks,

I think that question should be posed to the men having this cloth reproduced...

I know that Childs has seen more CS uniforms up close and personal than anyone else I know. He has had the chance to examine many examples of kersey Confederate items and I would trust his reproduction of that cloth foremost.

Yep, its out of stock, but we've got more in the looms on it's way.

As far as which cloth is better, I would say that based on originals, both fabrics are equally authentic as there is variation from original to original. CC fabric is heavier in weight and lighter in color and FHW is slightly thinner in weight and darker in color. If you need fabric for your late war project you can get fabric from either of these sources.

I've used both in the past as many other vendors have and I'm equally happy with the color choice, weave and weight of both.

Re: Blue/Gray Kersey, where to get?

I have compared FHW BG kersey to the original article through glass, but it was a close distance. I cannot comment as to weight or thickness, but the weave was identical. The original cloth was slightly more gray, with the FHW sample being slightly more blue, but this could be due to the age of the original uniform. This was the Brunet uniform in the Museum of Southern History in Sugarland, Texas, for those who remember that discussion.

I agree that it would be a good idea to ask the manufacturers what they based their product on. I have heard, through a reliable source, that FHW was sent a clipping from the seam allowance of an original Tait jacket and asked to reproduce the fabric for a customer, and continued producing it thereafter.

                Phil,

That rumor would be correct, as Pat showed me the sample during a visit to his mill a couple of years back. The comparison of the repoduction material to the sample, at least, was spot on.

I'm anxious as well to see some more FHW blue gray kersey come on the market.

WOW, I'm glad that I bought the last 50 yards of English Kersey that FHW had last month.
