As promised... here is the start of the key measurements you or your gunsmith will need to alter M1841's to their common War-time configurations
1. Colt Contract Alteration. (Used in conjunction with: Colt M1855 Revolving Rifle rear sight, "long" M1841 double strap/loop front band, Colt "clamp on ring" bayonet lug attachment, .54 or .58 barrel, brass M1841 front sight, all steel replacement ramrod for the M1841 brass tipped one.)
Rear Sight Location. To base of Colt M1855 Revolving Rifle rear sight: 2 15/16 inches. To the dovetail notch: 3 3/16 inches
Stock Tip to Muzzle. 5 inches
Overall stock length. 43 3/4 inches
Rear Sight dovetailed to barrel.
2. M1841 Rifle with Late Model M1858 Rifle Sight (Used in conjunction with M1855 Rifle rear sight, "1854" "short" double strap/loop front band, M1855 bayonet lug, .58 barrel, all steel replacement ramrod for the M1841 brass tipped one..)
Rear Sight Location: To base of late model M1855 Rifle rear sight: 2 7/8 inches. To the dovetail notch 3 1/8 inches.
Sight radius: 28 3/4 inches
Stock to Muzzle Tip: 5 3/4 inches
Overall Stock Length: 42 7/8 inches
Rear sight dovetailed and screwed to barrel.
3. M1841 Rifle with early Model M1858 Rifle Sight (Used in conjunction with the early .706" high M1855 Rifle rear sight (to 500 yards on side), the "1854" "short" double strap/loop front band, M1855 bayonet lug, .54 or .58 barrel, all steel replacement ramrod for the M1841 brass tipped one. .)
Rear Sight Location: To base of the early .706" high M1855 Rifle rear sight: 2 1/2 inches. To the dovetail notch 4 3/4 inches.
