  • Help: ID bayonet

I picked this bayonet up for ~50 dollars (American), with no idea of its type or origin. I have requested more info on it and will make it available if needed. I am sure some one can tell me what it is. It was marketed as original WBTS period and as a Springfield type. I am sure of one thing, it is smaller that .58 cal. I have researched the matherial I Have (the AC search,EoG and Google (in that order)). The closest bayonet I have found is the Austrian Lorenz .54 cal. My bayonet does have 4 sides, but does not demonstrate the twisting slide in the socket, as the Austrian Lorenz. It measures 21 5/8 inches from tip to socket and all markings are clear as in the pics attached. This is my first post, so I hope I placed it correctly. Many thanks. Long time reader, first time poster.

        Agree,

Looks like it's for a Beaumont. That rifle has a high front blade sight, and the socket is cut for it. That along with the style of blade for the most part nails the thing.

In my experience, one of those types of bayonets that seems to not command a tremendous amount, yet you just can't find one if you need one.

        Regards,

        John

Thanks for the help on this matter. Iwill be more specific abouth the markings when I return home from my paying job. Also keep in mind that I have one of these if any one ever desires such a bayonet.

            Re: Help: ID bayonet

You might try a query and posting your images on this forum:

Dedicated to the study, collection and preservation of antique and modern bayonets. Our scope includes all American made bayonets, including those that were produced for export, and also foreign made bayonets that were used by the United States

These folks should at least positively ID your bayonet. They technically are an association devoted to the study and collecting of North American bayonets, but a lot of folks cross collect.

            Good luck with it.

            Regards,

            John

              Re: Help: ID bayonet

I have checked out the advice given and I believe this to be a bayonet from the Beaumont.
              Mr. Reagan:
The markings are as followings(using bayonet anatomical terms):
"638." on the right side just forward of the Mortise
"ZZ.3221." near the top of the muzzle just forward of the clasp
"18" on the locking ring screw
"p" on the right side shank
"18" on the end of the bridge
"E" on the top of the blade shoulder
"6583" on the left side shank

              Thanks for everyone's help

I think it is Swedish, possibly for the m/1860 riflemusket or m/1860-67, 12,7x44R rimfire rollingblock conversion.
