A pard and I were talking about some of the men of our regiment who have done a particularly impressive job translating the manner of the 19th century man into their first person. This is a crucial element of living history and as Hank Trent so often points out, should not be limited to using period expressions and wearing the duds. Secondary sources have their place, but in this situation we are best off immersing ourselves in the writings of these men. In this way we can learn the day to day, their society and beliefs, even their way of sentence structure. Sooo.... what I'm getting at is what would people say are some particularly well written diaries and letter collections. A bibliography of first person....
