The image of the 7-button on Weed's site was originally published in the Company-Wag and was originally from the Scott Cross collection (although Weed doesn't cite the attribution for some reason).
Earlier in this thread, the question was raised about modifications on sack coats that were too large. A close look at the 7-button image will also reveal that this soldier actually moved his buttons over for a better fit to his thin frame. Look at the top button in relation to the collar and this becomes obvious.
As an aside, I examined an original sack coat in the late Dick Tibbals' collection that had been modified to a seven button, but it had been post-war restored back to its original configuration.
I have some other images of modified sack coats floating around left over from past publishing projects. I'll see if I can dig a few up.
This is sort of on topic. But what size buttons were issue on contract blouses in the western theater mid to late war.
I am wondering, because I am looking to make some improvements to my federal kit, that are easy fixes. like buttons and buckles and plates.
