  • Proper Springfield weight?

    Pards,
I did a search on this question, but didn't really find what I was looking for. I have a M-61 Springfield (defarbed) by John Zimmerman of Harpers Ferry WV. I had a old hand hold my weapon one time and he said it was too heavy? I have never held an original 61 Springfield so I do not know the difference in weight? It must be noticeable for him to comment on the weight. I do not know the Italian maker as it was (so called defarbed) when I bought it. Who can I send it to that can shave it down to the proper weight? Thanks.

Derrick, give James River a call...I bought my M61 from them, and the stock is noticibly thinner and has more of a contour in places. www.jamesriverarmory.com

        Re: Proper Springfield weight?

        Hallo!

By and large (no pun intended)...
The larger problem with weight is the increased "bulk" and beefed up barrel of the Italian Springfields, and the resulting increase in stock bulk to go with it.

Meaning, a repro Italian Springfield barrel may way about 1.8 pounds or so MORE than an original barrel.
And the Italian stock as much as .70-.75 pounds more than a typical original stock (original weights will vary a little based upon the density of the particular walnut tree wood used for the stocks).
