    Could someone refresh me on the standard location of companies in regimental line?

    These are a couple of ways that I recall and neither of them may be right.

    From Left to Right:

    If I remember correctly, fromt RIGHT to LEFT they are:

        Per Army Regulations, the order of companies was dictated by the seniority of the captains. It was probably for this reason that the position of companies in line could vary from regiment to regiment. So, we see stuff like this -- in the 14th NY the order was ACGFEDHKIB, and in the 2nd Michigan it was CKHEFIBAGD. See Gast, Garr, "The Mechanics of Civil War Unit Organization" in the CRRC.
