  • NC commutation jackets

    Hello,

Are there any sources for early war NC commutation jackets. I know about the NC sack and some of the Militia Frocks, but what about sent from home( commutation) jackets. I have done some searching, but I mostly find general articles on commutation or just the NC sack coat. Which has seamed to become the must have early war NC uniform. Any guidance to books or articles would be most helpfull!

    Thanks

Re: NC commutation jackets-Read my book

Hello, My book Cadet Gray and Butternut Brown contains information on NC's contribution to cloting the troops. There is no such thing as a Commutation jacket. There was a Commutaiton System Law where soldiers were paid in cash to provide themselves a uniform, even if they got their uniform from the Depot in Richmond or one of the State Depots.

There are 100's of photos of NC soldiers available. The NC pattern sack coat was very popular and is a very distinctive item. It was gone by Spring of 62' and jackets were issued instead of sack coats.
