Nice discussion on this topic. Attached you'll find some random images of a wooden frame pack ID'd to James Kethchin, Boyce Guards, 6th SCVI. Ketchin was a 1st LT and was killed at the Crater wearing this pack. The exterior is very thin enameled leather with the inside being lined with fine linen. Conversely, the four closure tabs are oilcloth with striped cotton ties. All iron hardware. You'll also note the pack is not square, rather rectangle.
The other pack may be postwar. The GLI stands for "Gordon Light Infantry". Both hardpacks reside at the Winnsboro Historical Society, Fairfield County, SC.
