The Proper Stitch

I have searched and came up with few results.. Being that there are many experts here I thought I would ask..

I am going to sew all of my military shirts and pants by hand, as well as the button holes. Does anyone know of the proper stitch? Like a drawing or illustration? I also need this for sewing proper buttonholes. Any information or illustrations would be apprecieated..(I have no sewing experience) Also, where would be a recomended place to buy patterns? Thanks
