I've searched and haven't found anything on this. Is there any documentation on background colours for affixing collar tabs on jean wool?

Re: Officer insignia on jean wool
You'll find that most extant CS coats have the rank insignia applied directly to the coat itself. Apart from the original material culture bearing this out, this is by far the easiest thing to do when dealing with multiple coats, portraying multiple ranks, or if you have a coat that may be difficult to match the cloth. Indeed the same goes for NCO stripes on CS jackets.
Get a hold of any number of folks that sell tapes, braids and trims and get yourself a couple of yards...then cut them up and start stitching. No need to match backing cloth, and you can promote or demote yourself at will or switch coats. I usually get mine from www.woodedhamlet.comJustin Runyon; Pumpkin Patch Mess: WIG-GHTI

For What Its Worth...
At one time BJ Zirkle was "the" best source for metallic tape for rank insignia, sleave braid, or for finished shoulder boards. The address was giltwire@aol.com however, I've not been in contact with them for some time, so I'm not sure if the e-mail address is even still active.John Wickett
