  • Information about sources for the 61st Illinois Infantry

    Hello All,

I am conducting some research into the 61st Illinois Volunteer Infantry and I need to know some information about what equipment they were issued and what uniforms they used. I know they were formed in 1862 and they were originally issued Lorenze rifle muskets and that they were issued Springfields in 1863. My direct ancestor, G. P. Hanks, was the First Sergeant then Captain of Company A and I wanted to put together an impression for that unit. Incidentally, I am a dead ringer for him as far as facial features and body shape go. We have some photos of him from his later life, when he was in his 60s and 70s. I have been able to piece together the campaigns they were in but I need a little help with sources on equipment issues. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
