        9) NC Museum of History

Pretty impressive list once you look at it. That's 10 (including the two at G'burg) English pattern knapsacks that we know of in this one thread. Wonder how many more are out there in institutions and private collections!? Small sample size but I think it gives us the perspective that these things were everywhere!

Hey Neill, Don't forget the knapsack at Chimborazo Hospital. They had the S. I & C on display in a glass case years ago when I visited. Has anyone examined it?

            Hello All,

Based on the pictures I've seen here, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that Nick ************ is making the best Isaac & Campbell pack on the market right now. If you have one of his packs, take a look at it and then look at the pictures here. His attention to detail is amazing. Then again I have never had to privilege to examine an original up close so maybe I'm off base here. Just my $.0.02

Re: S Isaac Campbell Knapsack Reproductions

                  I have a few questions,
Do the existing examples have waxed leather or buff leather carrying straps?
Do they all have makers marks?
what size are the letters used for the isaac and cambell stamp, and are they the same on various examples?

                  thank you

Re: S Isaac Campbell Knapsack Reproductions

                    Gentlemen,
After reading various posts and this list, I assume this would be the best place ask. With the recent research now available, who is offering the best reproduction of the Issac & Campbell knapsack when it comes to the details? There were posts years back of others working on their repros, but I didn't see any follow ups to those. Also, when might one first see these English packs in the field? While I used to own an old Sam Haywood repro years ago, I sold it off long ago unfortunately. These are basic questions I know, but I promise, I am working on flushing out my library with many of these new books being talked about. Thanks in advance!

                        Jon,
I would say that the two top I&C knapsacks is still Missouri Boot & Shoe and ********. I can not comment on the quality of the ACW Knapsack for I have not seen one, but the strap configuration as well as mess tin straps, looks more of the British Trotter knapsack.

                        I hope this helps/

Re: S Isaac Campbell Knapsack Reproductions

Thanks for all the replies. Right now, it seems the only two recommended quality sources for the English packs are MB&S and NJ ***** from what I have read and heard. Has anyone seen the quality of the items produced by "American Civil War Knapsacks" in person? I would be interested in some of their other items if good, not just the English pack. Also, out of all the new books out on English gear, which would help to justify the earliest use of the SI&C pack in the field? Thanks again for all the help.

Re: S Isaac Campbell Knapsack Reproductions

Having had an interest in British mess tins for many years and having owned several reproductions and originals, I know of a few quality reproductions by various vendors.
Dirty Billy still has several tins at his store copied from the original in the Gettysburg Visitors centre. The ears are too large but everything else is spot on. Yes I was there during the October Snow storm.
Jim Curren at Olson's tinware makes a very good copy with correct ears taken from measurements from an original in a local museum and made from a decent weight of tin.
The Park House Museum at Amherstburg in Canada makes an excellent 1851 pattern mess tin, though I think the tin to be a bit light, not that this is a serious problem.
Most tins imported were the 1854 pattern as the Dirty Billy, Jim Curren's pattern are and I believe the Jarnigan to be as well..
I agree that ******* makes the best mess tin cover.
These are not approved vendors and caution is in order.

                              Mod Note:
There is no problem discussing vendors that are not A-C Approved Vendors.

The issue about which to be cautious is making recommendations for inaccurate reproductions based on low cost. That would violate our "No Farbism" rule.

The caution was out of order. What was meant was to have a clear understanding of the specifications of the different patterns to get what you want.
Cost was not mentioned though, oddly enough, they all cost the same.
Purchasers should do the research. The 1854 pattern was the most common manufactured and was the predominately shipped pattern. The 1851 pattern was probably those purchased as surplus.
