      You may also try talkum dissolved in water and add some gum arabic. Apply with a brush, lket it dry in the sund. Brush it over carefully and leave the leather bleaching in the sun for a while. while veg. tanned leather will darken in the sun real buff leather will bleach.

        Kirby - sorry for not responding sooner. One thing the simple white dirt and water solution is lacking is an oil binder. Instead of using white lead, as per the period recipe, a small portion or thin coat of zinc white oil paint (found at most art or craft supply stores) can be used to finish or bind the surface.

          As an aside...doesn't the workwoman's guide have some guidance for lifting stains out of 'white' leather?
