  • 165th New York Duryee Zouaves or "Red Devil Mess"

A prior attempt at starting a new unit via this forum did not generate the response I had imagined. Rather, the response was unexpected. Positive but unexpected. "Meeting" and getting to know some different gentlemen has lead to the founding of a different unit.

We are launching in the Southern Indiana/Western Kentucky/Northwestern Tennessee/Southern Illinois (not to exclude gentlemen from other areas) a completely progressive (as much as we know how to) 165th New York Duryee's Zouaves.

We are aware that there are other reenactor units in existence that portray this same honorable group, and our intent is not to "best" or "outdo" them. We honor them and their efforts to portray "the Second Battalion." Probably the biggest reason for beginning anew is that we simply do not live within driving distance of the activities of these other units.

We have researched as completely as we currently know how every bit of clothing and equipment these men had and have had quotes generated by different vendors included in this forum's Approved Vendor list for those uniforms and accoutrements. We are continuing to research the cultural and genealogical backgrounds of these men, their professions prior to volunteering, and their dedication to ensure this 2nd battalion lived up to the reputation of their predecessors which was the 5th New York Zouaves.

If you are currently a member of another unit then we can still find room. We don't believe in requiring strict allegiance "one unit only." Many of us already have "home" units and have no immediate goals of making changes.

This unit is in its early days. We need energy and we need experience. Being progressive it may become necessary to portray other impressions both federal and confederate. Your input and knowledge would be extremely valuable. Additionally, there may be events where a Zouave impression would NOT be appropriate. We want to be ready to fill that void regardless.

A website will be forthcoming complete with unit history, recommended vendors for the custom uniforms and equipment, proposed 2009 tentative calendar as dates become available, full contact information, and whatever we think is appropriate.

Until that website is launched information can be obtained by contacting:
