  • Locating Andrew Martin!

    Gang,

Anyone know if Mr. Martin is on the Forum(s)? Even better, his contact information? I had a pair of knapsack straps and a painted ground cloth made by him nearly two years ago. Lost it at Hope's Campaign and would like to get in touch with him again.

    Thanks,

    Re: Locating Andrew Martin!

He was my old messmate and still one of my good friends. Andrew "Abner" Martin who made items for Jersey Skillet Licker is no longer reenacting, making products or thinking about the Civil War. I still talk to him twice a week, but rarely about this. Good friends and messmates are hard to find.

Now the only Andrew Martin I know of is with the GHTI and as far as I know, does not make any products

      Re: Locating Andrew Martin!

One of the fall projects is putting a new coat of linseed on the two Abner painted ground cloths I have worn about to tatters. One is black, the other black and yellow. His leftover pipe still smokes pretty good too.

Come to think of it, another cloth in that project pile was made either by Landrum or Justin Morris. There was a lot of plunder in that handcart when the peddlar came by, and most of it nearly caused a riot. Some of those fellers had never seen good stuff. Still, I got my hands on the yellow and green floorcloth first..:D

Best best for a cloth of comparable weight and quality--see if Carter and Jasper is still selling painted cloth off a roll, and make the item from that. I bought some from them for a different project several years ago and noted the quality.

That painted floorcloth was made by me, as I was being attacked by a raccoon I startled in the back of the workshed.

The painted cloth that Carter and Jasper sold by the yard was the last big project Abner did. Hope you can locate it. If not drop me a line, he and I swapped recipes over the years and I may be able to help you out. I still owe Bill Backus one.

And hopefully I'll get it sometime before I finish grad school.

Hey now Backus, no one ever said 2 things about me- #1 Asking me to make anything was easy. #2 Being my pard was easy.

Besides, last time I heard you and Gruber strictly share the same ground cloth and blanket, even when it's warm.

                  Pat,
Please give Abner my warmest regards. He was one of my first vendors and made all manner of first rate items. His groundcloths and floor coverings were legendary, however, my garage STILL smells of linseed oil!

                    Pat:

I'll send an email to Chris Utley about the oil cloth, thanks for the lead.

If the opportunity presents itself, pass on my regards to Mr. Martin about his good work. I had that ground cloth for nearly three years and loved it quite a bit. His items are some of my most prized possessions, seriously.

                    Regards,

Scaled some redfish, though. Does that count?

I wish I had gotten a copy of the "Dear God" said Abner review of Selma I did several years ago.

Todd Love still has a printed copy.

Boy, we had a time that weekend.

Since I've chosen to thin much of my 19th century gear by giving stuff away, a well-used, but restocked, Abner housewife went into a soldiers package last month at Fort McAllister.

The two commanders took a moment to agree upon the man who most deserved to receive that prize.

I'm keeping my Abner pipe though :D
